Cover Art and Spot Illustrations for Slant’d
My illustrations are based on the Japanese folktale The Crane Wife. I was drawn to this myth because of its emotional contradictions. It’s a story about care, but also about the quiet cost of giving too much of yourself. It’s about love, but also about the damage curiosity or desperation can cause when trust is broken. And it’s about gratitude, but also the sadness of realizing that something precious can’t stay forever.
I wanted to capture that delicate balance: the beauty of the crane woman’s world, her softness and strength, and the surreal mix of feathers, fabric, and human features as she holds herself between two identities. I focused on the moment where she’s both creating and unraveling, offering something meaningful while losing pieces of herself in the process.
“greek signs” is a book project aiming to reinterpret Greek Mythology.
We redesigned the visual images and presentation of this classic subject matter. The book layout showcases the Greek tales behind the ancient constellations. Throughout the book, the readers learn about the stories through a theatrical experience. For the illustrations, I chose to stick with a modern yet elegant style by alternating between geometric and organic shapes.Experimental Typeface and Layout Design by Yuki Murayama
